A Revolution in Memory Care
Over seven years ago, the leadership team of Hubbard Hill Living Wisdom Community acknowledged that the current approach to memory care was designed with too many limits and not enough opportunities. They courageously asked, “What are people living with dementia capable of, and what would their lives look life if we did things differently?” They pushed themselves to dream without limits to achieve truly revolutionary change, while remaining grounded in the reality of limited resources.
These leaders began using “what if” questions to guide their progress: What if those living with dementia had the same opportunities as everyone else? What if a social model of care—rather than a clinical model—was used to create a community that would give its residents a sense of purpose? What if residents could come and go from their homes at will, could visit with their neighbors and relax in backyards of their own? What if there were more “yes’s” and fewer “no’s” in their lives? What if they could live each day in their own way and contribute to their community in ways they always had? What if we can build this community ourselves? These possibilities have become reality in the Living Wisdom Center.
